“Novak has achieved incredible things”
Pete Sampras did not escape it. In an interview given to The Magazine Team, he answered the GOAT’s question. “ Who is the GOAT? It’s an impossible question. A shot to argue with everyone. Novak, Rod Laver. Novak has achieved incredible things over the past ten years. He has good stats against most players. He is also the one who has remained world number 1 the longest. He won everywhere. On the numbers, he has them all, except that of the Grand Slams. No, really, it’s too difficult for me to answer. It’s like asking me to choose between a Ferrari and a Lamborghini ” respond sampras. Words that suggest a preference for the Serb, without devaluing the performance of Rafael Nadal and of Roger Federer.
“We will never see these types of records again”
Asked about the outrageous domination of Nadal at Roland Garrosthe American, who has as many Grand Slams won that Nadal simply Porte d’Auteuil, praised the qualities of the Spaniard. ” In the United States, we use the term outlier (an aberration). Something you can’t explain. We will never see these types of records again. On land, he ticks all the boxes of the perfect player. Commitment, technique, mental. Everything he does there is exceptional. Roger and mol have had periods of dominance on grass, but to win the same Grand Slam fourteen times is incredible. And mentally, what a player! Surely the best I’ve ever seen. He struggles on each point as if it were the last. He is the one I would give as an example to a young person for mental commitment. he retorted.
“I didn’t think this record would fall anytime soon”
Pete Sampras saw his record of titles from Grand Slams pulverized by the Big 3. He thought he had done the hardest part by winning 14 tournaments, but that was without counting on the golden generation. “ If I imagined my broken record? No chance. I didn’t think this record would fall anytime soon. then three times. But it happened. Looking closer, I’m not that surprised. These three players have been so consistent during their careers, which are much longer than mine. In my time, we stopped around the age of 30. Mentally, I had reached my limit at 31. My quest to finish world No. 1 six years in a row has drained me of a lot of energy. Current players are more aware of dietetics. Physically they are better prepared too. These three are 35-36 years old. 41 for Federer. Having been so consistent for so many years, they are freaks, freaks of the sport. I don’t know how they do emotionally, to find the motivation to get back on the pitch. Not sure we’ll see it again one day ” admits sampras.
