the Belgian Grand Prix is part of the legend of the Formula 1. Contested on the 19 curves of the course of Spa Francorchamps, it often reserves its share of spectacular crashes. From the cataclysmic departure of 1990, through the pile-up of 1998, the massacre caused by Romain Grosjean and finally the tragedy Anthony Hubert. Le10Sport offers you an anthology of the most striking accidents of this circuit.
The mayhem of 1990
It’s quite simply one of the most legendary starts in the history of the Formula 1. August 26, 1990, a beautiful summer sun covers the circuit of Spa. The start is about to be given, but no one expects what’s next. The 26 single-seaters set off at full speed heading towards the hairpin The source. Nelson Piquet locks his brakes, visibly too cold, and crashes into the back of Nigel Mansell. At the same time, the engine Nicola Larini gives up the ghost, and the Italian is in slow motion. Martin Donnellytries by all means to avoid it, but ends up falling on his own teammate, Derek Warwick. They are not the only ones to be arrested because Aguri Suzuki and Emanuele Pirro put their feet on the ground. Add to this a contact between Stefano Modena and Satoru Nakajima in the Combes chicane. The chaos is total and the race is then interrupted. A second start is given but the drivers are still just as nervous. Always at Combes, Pierluigi Martini and Andrea de Cesaris cling while Paolo Barilla part of the fault in the Raidillon and hit the rail head-on. the Italian survived and came out of his single-seater unscathed. A third start will be given and this time, no accident will occur. The race will see triumph Ayrton Senna.
The 1998 pileup
In pouring rain, on August 30, 1998, the start was given. A few meters later, the accident is inevitable: David Coulthard loses control of his McLaren. He wreaks havoc and drags with him 14 single-seaters. Damon Hill, Ralf Schumacher and Esteban Tuero are the only ones to avoid this pileup. The race is then neutralized. An hour later, a second departure occurs but without Rubens Barrichello, Mika Salo, Olivier Panis and Ricardo Rosset. Michael Schumacher will hit Coulthard that he was about to overtake. This chaotic Grand Prix will end with eight drivers and the Briton Damon Hill will triumph.

The Grosjean Massacre
September 2, 2012, initially again, the unthinkable happens. Warm-up lap done, the surprising Kamui Kobayashi is about to start in second position. Overwhelmed by the size of the event, he smoked his brakes and missed his start. The pilots wanting to avoid it, Pastor Maldonado in the lead, shift immediately to the right of the track. Seeing the opening forming, Romain Grosjean decides to interfere and beats the Briton Lewis Hamilton. He then hits the Frenchman and pushes him on Sergio Perez. The single-seater of Grosjean takes off from the ground and lands on Fernando Alonso. hamilton does not fly away but still hits the Spanish pilot and Kobayashi. The pictures are stunning and Alonso comes out unscathed.
We lost Anthoine Hubert today in the F2 race at Spa. He was 22 years old. My thoughts are with those he left behind and with the team. It’s a sad day. pic.twitter.com/rPXQieymeD

After hitting the rail, the American’s single-seater Juan Manuel Correa comes to join her in the background, hits her violently before turning around.
